Specific Examples of How Clements Will Fix California
ECONOMY: I will cut taxes and regulations across the board with the goal of completely eliminating as many taxes and regulations as possible. I also want to stop the government from interfering in markets and industries which only leads to disaster. These changes will allow struggling companies to hire more people and grow their business. It will make it easier for people to start their own business and make a profit.
EDUCATION: Switch ownership of schools and colleges from government management to private management, thereby reducing government spending by around 50% and allowing all parents the opportunity to send their child to a better quality, less expensive private school.
WELFARE: Switch all welfare programs from government management to private management. Private charities and non-profit organizations will waste less money and provide better services than government bureaucrats. Before government got in the charity business the poor and elderly were much better cared for by caring, resourceful, hardworking charities who made sure that the voluntary donations they received only went to the people who really needed them.
TRAFFIC JAMS: I'm sick and tired of traffic jams every day. First, it's time to experiment with innovative solutions by private companies. Second, carpool lanes are an ineffective waste of freeway capacity. I would eliminate them and allow everyone to drive in them. Third, I want to add another lane by redrawing the lines and eliminating the margins where possible. Fourth: Private companies can operate helicopters that quickly pick disabled cars off the freeway. The helicopter expense will be paid for by the driver and their insurance company.
ENVIRONMENT: Privately owned lands are better cared for than publicly owned lands. To best protect wilderness areas I will sell them off to private caretakers, offering the first right of purchase to non-profit organizations whose mission is to protect natural areas and wildlife. These organizations will have more incentive, money and volunteers to protect their lands against polluters and poachers. They will be able to sue those who damage their land. Private ownership of wilderness areas by people who care about them and an army of attorneys are better protectors of nature than government managers and extremist regulations that violate our rights.
GOVERNMENT DEBT: The debt will be paid off in record time under my plan. I will cut government spending by at least 50%, sell off state buildings and lands from government bureaucracies that I will eliminate, and reduce California's interest rate by improving our credit rating as a result of the proactive measure my administration will take to pay down the state debt.
ILLEGAL ALIENS: Immigration is usually a good thing. Smart, hard working, ambitious and wealthy people came from around the world to build America into the greatest nation on earth. Immigration is a problem when people ignore immigration laws, sneak into the country and tap the welfare state. My solution: eliminate the welfare state. Until the welfare state is completely eliminated I will have state police standing outside welfare facilities picking up illegal aliens and putting them on a bus or plane back to where they came from. Legal immigrants are welcome if they pay their own bills, but no one is welcome if they force California tax payers to pay their education, medical and welfare bills.
CRIME: I will reduce crime as follows: 1. Focus police on stopping violent crimes by taking them off crimes that do not involve the initiation of force. 2. Stop releasing violent criminals from overcrowded prisons; reduce overcrowding by no longer prosecuting or imprisoning citizens for victimless crimes such as drug usage, prostitution and similar situations. 3. With the savings from focused law enforcement and a smaller prison population, hire more police to cover the most dangerous places in California and help illegal aliens return to their home country.
HOUSING: High home prices like high prices for everything result from more demand than supply. We can't reduce the demand but we can increase the supply. Oppressive regulations and taxes make building new housing on private lands expensive or impossible. Building new homes is also made impossible or expensive by dictatorial zoning regulations, environmental laws and building codes. I would eliminate these taxes and regulations to the best of my ability. In addition, some public lands, especially those in less scenic areas could be sold to builders so they can build new apartments and single family homes.
